SOUNDTRACK

For the film's soundtrack, I thought it would be interesting to choose a candombe theme, a murga and contemporary Uruguayan songs, plus a few exceptions that came up at random.

In searching for a track that represented candombe, an Afro-Uruguayan rhythm composed only of drums, I searched through dozens of songs related to the style, but there was none that touched me as deeply as "Llamada: Piano Dialogue". This llamada was not only created by a legend of Montevideo's barrio Sur, Grão-Mestre Cachila, but recorded by top-notch sound engineers under the guidance of Mirtha Pozzi and Pablo Cueco for the Musique du Monde collection of the Buda Musique label, directed by Gilles Fruchaux.

During the Marihuana World March, the song "Ilegal" by Murga Falta y Resto, one of the groups performing that day in the Líber Seregni square, came to me. And not only the lyrics and the melody are extremely catchy, but the body movement performed by its members while singing. There is something visceral and theatrical about these groups, and Falta y Resto is definitely a unique murga.

"La Mandanga" was used as the musical background for the timeline that deals with the history of cannabis in the world since 6,000 years ago. An infectious song, as well as a big Spanish hit sung by singer El Fary in the late 1970s. Great for dancing.

A coincidence is that from a drift on the bandcamp platform, two bands with the same name joined the track: Kif. Only one of them is based in Marseille and the other transits between Montevideo and Monterey. The songs in question are "AOI" and "Yerbanegra" [sidirum remix version]. Kif is also a name of Arabic origin for a kind of powder made from tiny crystals taken from the resinous flowers and leaves of cannabis, which by their texture resemble pollen.

And finally, we have a piece entitled "The game of the century", performed by Connor Shafran (C. Snow) and Eric Poe. The two percussionists use only a chessboard with its pieces, 2 chairs, a chess clock, and a metronome to create this track that represents the moves of the historic match dueled by Bobby Fischer and Donald Byrne in 1956. I also share here other songs that served as a basis for the musical research, but that ended up not being included in the final soundtrack.

I hope you enjoy them!
